Undiscovered North by Two Wheels

Over three decades of isolation due to the civil war, the northern Jaffna peninsula of the island is still less visited by the tourists. Recently rebuilt roads and railways connect the Jaffna to the rest of the island perfectly and welcome anybody who wishes to discover. Colorful Hindu temples, Authentic Jaffna food, charming and welcoming people, lagoon birdlife and local markets and bazaar add the colors to this less discovered destination.

Day 01

Arrive to Bandaranayake International Air port, Greet and welcome by our cycling team. Thereafter transfer to the hotel in Waikkala. (next to Negombo)

(If your arrival flight is in the morning, you can visit Negombo town by vehicle in the early evenings)

Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Waikkala.

Day 02

Ride from Waikkala to Chilaw (Approx 40KM)

After Breakfast transfer by vehicle to start the amazing bike ride in Sri Lanka.
Waikkala, the beautiful sandy and coastal village in the western province of Sri Lankan is our starting point. Through which we ride along the flat terrain and relaxing coastal roads. Passing fishermen trying to sell their catch of the day all along the road, sort their nets after a catch and locals buying fresh fish for their delicious curry lunch. If we come across some fishermen pulling their nets we too would stop to help them a bit and make our unique pictures. This coast was highly influenced by colonial rulers due to the spice trade. Portuguese influence on this area still can be seen on every corner of junctions with little statues of Roman Catholic saints. Passing many coconut palm lands, continue our ride to Chilaw, a Fishing village in the North Western province of the Island, there we reach the final destination of our morning ride.

Thereafter transfer to Anuradhapura by vehicle (apporx: 03Hrs and 30 Minutes)
In the early evenings visit the most sacred Sri Maha Bodhi which is the oldest documented tree in the world.

Day 03

Anuradhapura temple ride and village ride (Aprroxi 45KM)

After breakfast we explore ruin city of Anuradhapura, the first ancient capital of Sri Lanka. Gigantic stupas, ancient Buddhist monastic complexes, tanks and ponds, incredible stone carvings will stop our bicycle every other minute for pictures. Shade of massive native tress and the banyan trees grow among the ruins of the ancient capital will take us to the history before 2000years.
On completion of the morning ride in the ancient complex, be back to the hotel for lunch and pool time before we head to the village for our rice paddy trail.

Day 04

Anuradhapura to Madu Road ride and transfer to Jaffna (Approxi 60KM)

After breakfast start the ride from Anuradhapura and ride to Thanthirimale trough the rural villages, which borders to the northern part of the island. For long time the area was bordered for the civil war, therefore the people here are still poor and live by agriculture. Having a Break to visit ancient Thanthirimale Buddhist temple we continue our ride towards to Madu road.

End of the ride transfer to Jaffna via Mannar. (Transfer time approximately 03Hrs)

Day 05

Jaffna / Kurikattuwan / Nagadeepa Island and city ride (Approxi 50KM)

Having an early breakfast to avoid the heat we start our ride from Jaffna to visit Nagadeepa Island which is a prime pilgrimage site for Buddhist as well as Hindu devotees. When you are pedaling trough Jaffna lagoons, it is common to see the fisherman trying to catch prawns and crabs all over. This is a paradise for the bird lovers during migrate season. Arriving to Kurikattuwan, we take the ferry to the Nagadeepa island to visit the temples and retune to Jaffna hotel for lunch.
In the late afternoon we take the bike again to explore Jaffna town including the fort area, library, Nallur temple and Central Street. Enjoy your dinner at an authentic local restaurant next to Nallur Hindu temple.

Day 06

Jaffna local market walk and train ride (No cycling)

After breakfast we will walk in the local markets and the town areas to get a hint of the local life style. We can see many environmental friendly products, fruits and vegetables and other essential items are been sold in these little shops. Then we will transfer to the Jaffna railway station to catch the train to Anuradhapura.

Day 07

Ride from Sigiriya to Dambulla (Approx. 40-50 km)

We start the ride next to the magnificent Sigiriya rock fortress. Following an irrigation canal we ride passing agricultural lands of sweet potato, beans and rice paddies. All the while observing the natural rhythm of local life, first we stop at the bund of the Kandalama Laka where a short break will be taken in view of the stunning lake while our team serves some local snacks and beverages. All the while your guide confers to you a comprehending understanding about the local culture and atmosphere all throughout the ride. Moving along a nice gravel path while following a small stream, you finish the first half of the ride by indulging yourself in the splendor of the world heritage site as deemed by UNESCO, the Dambulla rock temple.
Afterwards you’d loop back to your starting point again following a serine and lush pathways full of local farming culture and its experience.
In the late afternoon, transfer to Minneriya or Kaudulla to see one of the biggest gathering of elephants in Asia. (Please note that there will be occasionally some days that you don’t see the gathering, but still may see some elephants and other wildlife too.

Day 08

Ride from Giritale to Polonnaruwa (Approx 55KM)

After Breakfast transfer to Minneriya by vehicle. Start the bike ride on the ancient Minneriya dam and continue it along an irrigational canal where bird wildlife is plenty. Today we are in the heart of the rice cultivation and the granary of the island. In this ride we will get an exposure on many day today activities of the local farming community. Meet a farming family and learn how to cook authentic rice and curry from them. Enjoying the cooked curry lunch and pedal to Polonnaruwa, stopping at another house to be refreshed with an exotic coconut juice offers by the village family.

Day 09

Ride from Polonnaruwa to Naula – Kandy (Approxi 70KM)

After breakfast start the ride from Parakramasamudra dam and ride around it to get in to Angamedilla, to Cross over the famous elephant corridor. Pedaling under the shades of massive wayside trees along the canals makes our journey special. Arriving on the view point of Moragahakanda, we will be stuck on the panoramic view over the valley and the knuckles heritage mountain range. Countryside little town Naula is our riding destination for the day.
Transfer to Kandy by vehicle, stopping at Mathale to visit a spice plantation with an herbalist.

Overnight stay in Kandy.

Day 10

Kandy city ride (Approxi 25KM)

After breakfast we start the Kandy city ride from the lake round. Pedaling trough the local markets with vegetables, clothes and many other essential goods we arrive at Peradeniya university premises and the royal botanical gardens. Visit a gem lapidary and jewelry to learn about Sri Lankan gem mining process. Transfer by vehicle to Giragama to see a tea factory to see the manufacturing process of Ceylon black tea.

Departure/ Drop to Colombo/ Beach stay
